Primo Primland!
A lot of my friends are eager to travel, but hesitant to do so because of concerns about resurgence of the coronavirus. Last month, my sister, a friend and I found a cure for our travel “bug” without taking unnecessary risks related to the other “bug.” We found our escape to Primland — a little-known secluded, luxury mountain getaway located in southern Virginia. The destination met all of our criteria for a great 4-day getaway under the current pandemic conditions — a drivable distance (only about a 6-hour drive from Lexington), plenty of outdoor activities, and great dining options. Being a part of the Virtuoso network was not one of our requirements, but it certainly was an added bonus! We jumped at this opportunity on the first weekend that out -of- state travel from Kentucky was permitted.
After a beautiful drive to Virginia, the fun began. We observed all the current COVID guidelines and precautions, as did the friendly and welcoming staff of Primland. We checked into our suite located in the main lodge overlooking the gorgeous mountains and quickly headed for the trails. For four days we hiked, rode horses, and screamed our way through the beautiful 12,000 acres of the property aboard RTV’s.
All of that activity made us hungry and Primland had that covered as well. Lunch was an outdoor BBQ with pulled pork, brisket, chicken and all the fixin’s, including an awesome custard with fresh berries and house-made granola. We enjoyed leisurely dinners at an outdoor table on our huge deck. Although the restaurants were not yet open due to the pandemic, room service staff brought our tasty selections right to our suite, steaming hot. Pig Candy! Oh my, how we loved the thick cut bacon strips with caramelized maple, sugar, and cayenne pepper.
We look forward to the dining experiences when the restaurants reopen. Primland is known for fabulous dining, with freshness being a top priority. Many organic, sustainable ingredients are sourced locally or grown in the organic garden right on property. Although we hated to leave, we entertained ourselves on the ride home making plans to return and promised to bring our spouses so they could play golf on the resort course.
